The law governing Labor and Employment in Washington State has undergone a number of important changes within recent years. These changes include increases in minimum wage, broader availability of medical leave, and the first major update in Washington’s overtime laws in more than 40 years. In light of these changes, it is now more important than ever to be aware of your obligations as an employer, or your rights as an employee.

January 1, 2020 marked the enactment of two major laws impacting the employment sector including the increase of statewide minimum wage to $13.50 /hr and Washington’s shift from the former Family Leave Act to the new Paid Family Medical Leave act. Another major law set to overhaul Washington’s overtime rules will take effect on July 1, 2020, and it is imperative that both employers and employees are aware of the changing landscape.

Increasingly, we are asked to advise our clients on a variety of workplace disputes. As the consequences for a violation can be costly, the best course of action in any event is to keep apprised of the relevant laws and to be aware of your rights. We believe that the best solution is to take a preventative approach and work with our clients to promote compliance within the workplace. However, the reality is that both employers and employees have a tendency to seek legal assistance more often after a violation of some regulation has already been alleged.
